Challenges Faced
Tedious & Complex Documentation
The process of applying for a PR is immensely complicated and tedious for Tina who is Vietnamese and is not well versed in English. As the application is done fully in English only, this proved to be a herculean task for both Tina and Patrick. They may not fully understand what is required of her to put her application in the best light to ICA.
Language Barrier
Tina does not generally use English in her daily life which means that applying for a PR has an added level of difficulty as not only might she not be able to apply for it by herself, but she may also miss out on important key points and highlights to put her application in the best light to ICA.

Limited Work Rights
Before obtaining PR, Tina was holding a Dependent Pass, which did not allow her to work freely in Singapore. She had to apply separately for a work pass, which limited her career flexibility and independence. Now, as a PR, she is free to seek employment without additional permits—opening up many more career opportunities and allowing her to contribute financially to her family.

No Retirement Savings Security
As a Dependent Pass holder, Tina was not eligible for the Central Provident Fund (CPF) scheme, which is a key component of retirement planning in Singapore. Without CPF contributions, she had no structured savings for her future. Gaining PR status means she can now accumulate CPF savings through employment, giving her peace of mind and financial security in the long run.

Zero Cost of Living Benefits
Without PR, Tina did not qualify for various government subsidies—such as healthcare and education support—that help residents manage the high cost of living in Singapore. As a PR, she now has access to these essential benefits, greatly improving her quality of life and easing financial pressures.

Additional Up to 17% into Her Monthly Salary
With her new PR status, Tina now contributes to the Central Provident Fund (CPF) together with her employer—adding up to 17% more on top of her monthly salary. Previously, as a Dependent Pass holder, she had no CPF savings at all. This change has significantly strengthened her financial foundation and ensures a more secure future.

Free to Work Without Extra Permits
One of the biggest transformations for Tina was the freedom to work without needing to apply for a separate work pass. As a Dependent Pass holder, she had to go through additional approvals to secure a job. Now, as a PR, she can work freely in Singapore, giving her full flexibility and independence in building her career.

Better Career Prospects & Job Stability
Employers in Singapore often prefer hiring PRs due to fewer hiring restrictions and longer-term commitment. Since becoming a PR, Tina has enjoyed more job opportunities and greater career stability. In fact, shortly after receiving her PR status, she secured a better job with improved prospects—something that would have been much harder on a Dependent Pass.
