Citizenship Application

General

Singapore Citizenship provides full legal rights and voting privileges, along with National Service obligations, and has a rigorous application process. Singapore PR offers certain benefits but not voting rights, involves a less complex application process, and PRs are not obligated to serve in the military.

Singaporean citizens hold one of the most powerful passports in the world, providing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to many countries and territories. This facilitates easier travel for business, leisure, or personal reasons.

It's important to note that they can apply for deferment to pursue other endeavours like further studies. However, exemption from NS is typically only granted on medical grounds.

Singaporean citizenship brings a host of advantages, including a secure environment, a thriving job market, excellent education, healthcare, and global travel access with a Singaporean passport. While the cost of living may be higher with a competitive job market, the benefits significantly outweigh the drawbacks, providing you with a prosperous and globally connected lifestyle. Consider this as an investment in a brighter future. If you're contemplating Singaporean citizenship, consult our experts for guidance on this exciting opportunity.

While PR status unlocks specific benefits, Singaporean citizenship offers more extensive coverage. Citizens enjoy additional hospital subsidies like CHAS and Medisave Life, housing priority for BTO flats, ABSD exemption on their first home, baby bonuses for new families, and U-Save, GST rebates and CPF percentage contribution to counter inflation. These advantages make citizenship an appealing choice for comprehensive benefits and a secure future. If you're considering the shift from PR to citizenship, consult our experts for personalized guidance on the opportunities it provides.

The Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance, and Loyalty (ORAL) is mandatory for all minors who acquire Singapore Citizenship before the age of 21. This oath symbolizes their allegiance to Singapore following the renunciation of their overseas citizenship. It's a crucial step, and minors who do not fulfill this requirement will risk having their Singapore Citizenship revoked upon reaching their 22nd birthday.

Yes, attending the Singapore Citizenship Ceremony is mandatory for new citizens. This event, scheduled after your citizenship approval, is where you'll receive your Identification Card and Certificate. It also includes community-sharing sessions, fostering community connections. The National Citizenship Ceremony aligns with National Day celebrations, where new citizens receive their pink NRICs and certificates, emphasizing the sense of community and belonging.

Upon the conclusion of the citizenship ceremony, you will receive a pink acknowledgment card by post, providing detailed instructions for the collection of your prestigious Singapore Passport.

Should you choose to renounce your Singapore Citizenship to facilitate migration to another country, this can be done after acquiring citizenship overseas. Following this decision, your status will immediately transition to that of a foreign national. If you lack a permit to remain in Singapore, you will be required to depart the country within 24 hours.

Obtaining Singaporean citizenship varies in ease based on individual circumstances and eligibility criteria. There is no fixed quota for approvals. Factors impacting your chances include PR status, family ties, contributions, and community integration. While no guarantees exist, a strong application profile and meeting eligibility requirements enhance your prospects. Consulting experts are advisable for personalized guidance on your application.

You can expect the application for a Singapore Citizenship to take at least 12 months to be completed.

While the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) does not disclose specific reasons for application rejections, some common factors that may lead to an application being declined include:

  • Weak Application Profile: An inadequately presented application with limited evidence of your integration, contributions, and ties to Singapore.
  • Incorrect or Missing Documentation: Failing to provide accurate and complete documentation can hinder the application process.
  • Insufficient Economic Contribution: If you haven't met the required economic criteria, this could affect your application negatively.
  • Inability to Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements: Failing to fulfill the fundamental prerequisites for Singaporean citizenship, such as PR status or family ties, can result in application rejection.

Online Application: Start with an online application that includes an eligibility check assessing PR status, family ties, and economic contributions. If eligible, proceed with document submission.

Approval Stages: Following document submission, there are two approval stages: first in principle and final approval. At the final approval stage, applicants must renounce their foreign citizenship and integrate fully with the community.

Citizenship Ceremony: Once approved, attend the citizenship ceremony where you'll take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance, and Loyalty (ORAL).

Receive Documents: After the ceremony, receive your Identification Card and Certificate, marking the successful transition to Singaporean citizenship. Any ongoing obligations such as National Service will still apply.

Work Pass Upgrade

Upgrading to a Higher-Tier Work Pass

To upgrade, enhance your skill sets and education level. This enables you to command a higher income and an education certificate that would meet the prerequisites of the work pass criteria set by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Singapore.

Upgrading to a S/E-Pass opens the gateway to higher income potential. Moreover, many work permit holders who transition to S/E-Pass status become eligible to apply for Singapore PR, providing enhanced opportunities for long-term residency and stability.

There are a few reasons why you may not be eligible for an S-Pass / E-Pass even if you have been working here for a long time:

  1. You are only holding an SPM Certificate and below. Having no recognized education certificate will not allow you to meet the MOM Work Pass Upgrade Criteria.
  2. You do not meet the minimum salary income. Upgrading yourself with a recognized certificate will help you not only command higher pay and skillsets but also unlock more opportunities.

Types of Work Passes

Singapore offers various work passes, including the Work Permit, S-Pass, and Employment Pass, each designed for different skill levels and income requirements.

The primary distinction between S-Pass and E-Pass is the worker’s skill, education, and income level. S-Pass is for mid-skilled workers with lower salary requirements, while E-Pass is for higher-skilled professionals with higher income and education prerequisites.

To upgrade from a Work Permit to an S-Pass, you must meet specific criteria such as the minimum salary ($3,150) and a recognized diploma certificate.

To upgrade from a Work Permit to an E-Pass, you must meet the specific income criteria of $5,000 with a bachelor's degree. Candidates must also pass the COMPASS Framework Criteria with at least 40 points.

Yes, Malaysians typically have a lower qualifying salary range for both S-Pass and E-Pass application. This varies based on several factors. For precise details, consult official sources. Book an appointment now.

Work Permit Upgrade FAQs

Upgrading your work permit to an S-Pass or E-Pass not only offers potential PR eligibility, job security, and increased opportunities for higher earnings but also provides enhanced employment benefits, greater flexibility in job opportunities, and improved career advancement prospects in Singapore.

Meeting the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) requirements can be challenging, however Immigration experts like Kenneth & Co can help you simplify the process to ensure a smoother transition in your upgrading journey.

Collaborating with your prospective employer is crucial, as that is the first step to kick off your application. The Ministry of Manpower then evaluates each applicant based on various criteria, with both the individual's and the hiring company's credentials assessed. However, Kenneth & Co can offer guidance to meet MOM eligibility requirements in the process of upgrading your work permit.

To upgrade, improve your qualifications and income to fulfill the criteria for S-Pass or E-Pass. All candidates must hold either a MOM-recognized diploma or a bachelor's degree.

By elevating your educational qualifications, you acquire valuable skills, which can potentially lead to increased compensation and fulfill the educational level requirements necessary to qualify for an S-Pass or E-Pass.

Benefits of S-Pass and E-Pass

Benefits include higher compensation, eligibility for a Dependent Pass, and the possibility of applying for PR.

No, Work Permit holders cannot apply for PR directly. The first step is to upgrade to an S-Pass or E-Pass.

For a Work Permit to convert to a PR in Singapore, they will need to enhance their qualifications by obtaining a Recognized Diploma certificate by MOM (Ministry of Manpower).

There is no definite timeline for a work permit to become a PR in Singapore. However, on average, our clients typically secure their S-Pass/E-Pass within 12-18 months (about 1 and a half years). Check out our case studies for more information.

While there's no guarantee, completing the program can meet the educational requirement necessary for an upgrade of an S-Pass or E-Pass. As a form of assurance, many of our candidates have successfully upgraded to an S/E-Pass Holder using our provided solutions.

E-Pass Renewals

To renew your E-Pass in Singapore:

  • Submit the renewal application to MOM before your current employment pass expires.
  • Ensure your job meets the minimum salary criteria with a valid passport.
  • Score 40 points in the COMPASS Framework.
  • Ensure your employer is registered with MOM.

The E-Pass renewal requirements generally include:

  • Meeting the EP qualifying salary (minimum $5000 starting salary).
  • Fulfilling the role as a managerial, executive, technician in a specialized job.
  • Passing the 40 points-based Complementarity Assessment Framework (COMPASS).

Check your eligibility on the MOM website or consult your employer's HR department for guidance on specific requirements and criteria for your renewal.

If your E-Pass renewal is not approved, you'll need to leave Singapore when your current pass expires. Ensure you make the necessary arrangements within the grace period (30 days) allowed by your existing pass.

After your E-Pass expires, you're usually granted a grace period, typically around 30 days. During this period, you should obtain a new pass, leave the country, or face potential penalties for overstaying.

Pursuing a master's program can enhance your qualifications and employability, making you a more attractive candidate to potential employers. This increases your chances of meeting the renewal criteria, especially if educational qualifications are a factor.

The COMPASS framework model comprises various components for a candidate to score 40 points to pass the evaluation. A reputable master's Certificate adds +10-20 points, crucial for increasing the success rate in passing the latest COMPASS Framework.

S-Pass Upgrade

Yes, it is possible to upgrade from an S-Pass to an E-Pass in Singapore, but specific eligibility criteria must be met. For more information, refer to the E-Pass eligibility criteria above.

The eligibility criteria typically include a higher minimum monthly salary, job type, and qualifications. Specific criteria may change over time, so it's essential to refer to the latest guidelines provided by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) or consult our immigration experts for more information.

The first-time upgrade from S-Pass to E-Pass often has more stringent requirements compared to subsequent upgrades. This initial upgrade may require a higher salary threshold and additional qualifications to meet E-Pass criteria. Note, every application is unique and is benchmarked differently.

Yes, your employer will typically initiate the upgrade process on your behalf. They will submit the application to the MOM, and it's crucial to work closely with your employer to ensure that all necessary criteria are met.

An E-Pass typically offers higher earning potential and more work opportunities in Singapore compared to an S-Pass. E-Pass holders often have fewer restrictions and enhanced benefits.

To stay updated, regularly check the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) website or consult with a professional who can provide the most current information and guidance.
